Canadian Mesonet Project Update (v2025.06.26): Historical View

This update to the Canadian Mesonet Portal introduces a new feature that allows users to view and graph historical weather station data. Users can now explore past observations over customizable time ranges, enabling easier analysis of trends, events, and long-term patterns directly through the portal's interactive interface.

Historical Graphing

Users can now access and plot historical observations for any station on the map. Whether you're tracking air temperature, wind speed, precipitation, or other variables, the new historical charting tool makes it easy to explore trends over time. By using the historical view button on the map, you can simply select a station, choose your variable, and specify the date range — instantaneous values, averages, highs and lows for your selected time period are automatically displayed, along with a clean, responsive chart. For example, the chart below shows air temperature fluctuations at the Tobermory RCS station for a week in January:

View Past Conditions on the Map

In addition to station-level charts, you can now step back in time across the full surface map. A new timeline slider and interval menu let you visualize how conditions changed hour-by-hour or minute-by-minute across the entire network. Take a look at the feature in action below:

You can control the playback interval (1-minute to 6-hour steps), making it easy to track evolving weather systems or verify reported conditions at a given time.

These new features add a whole new dimension to situational awareness—ideal for storm tracking, post-event analysis, or historical review. If you have any feedback about this update, please email nmp@uwo.ca!
