Resolution Support Service
Student Conflict Support
Navigating conflicts with your roommate, varsity team, or with peers in a class project can be challenging, but approaching it skillfully can have a meaningful impact on you and your peers well-being. This service is designed to support students experiencing interpersonal conflicts with peers, and can support you in three different ways.
Conflict Skills Coaching
Intended for students seeking to navigate conflict more effectively when the other party is unwilling to participate in mediation/facilitated conversation.
Through one-on-one sessions or small group settings, an impartial mediator will work with the student(s) on building skills in conflict management. The mediator will not provide advice to the student, however they will support them to develop specific skills to meet their needs or the needs of a specific situation.
Facilitated Conversations
A space for two or more students to meet with an impartial mediator, and build mutual understanding through constructive conversations with the goal of resolving a challenging issue.
The process is voluntary and confidential (with safety-related exceptions), informal (may or may not involve a written plan or agreement), and restorative in nature, focusing on improved communication and relationships.
Mediated Conversations
This service is best suited for students requiring a specific plan or arrangement to follow a facilitated discussion. Common situations may include roommates negotiating the use of shared space, or classmates in a small group managing continued points of contact.
Mediation is voluntary and confidential process (with safety-related exceptions explained at the outset). Any agreements reached are summarized in a non-binding mediation agreement, which is shared with both participants. If both participants agree, they may return to mediation to revise the agreement.
