France-Canada Research Fund

The is a major instrument of Franco-Canadian scientific cooperation, created in 2000 through an agreement between the French Embassy in Canada and a consortium of 23 Canadian universities.

Start-up grants of $8,000 to $15,000 CAD are awarded to French and Canadian teams collaborating for the first time, to fund research and student mobility between the two countries. Funds are available for two years, and are open to all fields of research promoting interdisciplinarity.

FCRF and FCRF+ programs may be beneficial to researchers seeking mobility and networking opportunities to partner on future Horizon Europe collaborations.

Eligibility

  • Two researchers – one from Canada and one from France – that haven’t collaborated before.
  • Selection Criteria:
    1. Contribution to the advancement of knowledge (quality, scientific relevance)
    2. Innovative nature of the proposed project
    3. Quality of the team
    4. Proposed execution of research (method, calendar, budget)
    5. Significance & balance FR/CA
    6. Participation of MSc, PhD, and young researchers
    7. from 2025: no priority topics.

Notice of Intent

Internal draft deadline:

  •  to express your interest in applying to the competition.
  • If more than five applications are received, the College of Reviewers will score and select the top five applications to be forwarded to the embassy on the final external deadline.
  • The total number of applications will be given during the first days of November.

Internal final deadline:

  • Submit your ROLA proposal and final application to researchoffice@uwo.ca.
    • The electronic file’s name must include the surnames of the French and Canadian PIs (e.g., nameFR_nameCA.pdf)
    • Applicants send their final application to researchoffice@uwo.ca for review and signature page.
    • Note: ROLA approvals must be obtained before the signature page is released. Each applicant must complete a ROLA proposal for chair and dean approvals.
  • No new applications will be received after this date.
Friday, December 19, 2025, by/before 11:59 p.m. ET

External deadline:

  • Final submission with institutional signatures to the embassy is done by 深夜福利站 Research.

Frequently Asked Questions

No, only researchers holding a tenured or tenure-track position may apply.
Researchers who wish to apply must never have worked together. Co-publication, joint organization of symposia or joint supervision of students are considered collaborations. The researchers concerned are not eligible.
Yes, as long as the partners are different and are new collaborations. Submit one application per group/ collaboration.
FCRF funds are primarily intended to finance the mobility of researchers, including young researchers; as such, travel expenses such as flights, accommodation and meals are eligible. Fees should be balanced to give students a chance to travel as well. Indirect costs of universities (overheads) and salaries are not eligible.
Examples include equipment or material costs required for the project are eligible; however, it is recommended no more than 10% of the total budget be included in the “other” category.
