Move Through the Mess: Finding Strength in Imperfect Moments
When life feels messy, it’s easy to put wellness on the back burner. Assignments pile up, exams approach, and stress levels rise. But this month’s Wellness Wednesday theme reminds us that movement doesn’t need to be perfect to matter. Sometimes, the most important thing you can do is simply keep moving—through the mess.
Rest Is Part of the Process
During reading week, rest isn’t just allowed—it’s essential. Taking time to pause, recharge, and check in with yourself helps prevent burnout and supports long-term well-being. Research shows that adequate rest improves focus, memory, and resilience (American Psychological Association, 2023). Resting well is an active choice that sets you up for success when you return to your routines.

Messy = Meaningful
Not every workout or activity will feel good, and that’s okay. Maybe you go for a walk while upset, or you cut a workout short because your energy is low. These moments are still meaningful because they represent persistence. Wellness experts note that progress is rarely linear—showing up on the hard days builds resilience and helps you grow (Mayo Clinic, 2023).

Feelings Before Fitness
Instead of forcing yourself to follow what you “should” do, it’s important to listen to your body and emotions. Tuning into how you feel helps you choose the type and amount of movement that fits your current energy level. Whether that means a full gym session or a short stretch, honoring your feelings creates a healthier, more sustainable relationship with movement (CDC, 2022).

You’re Not Alone
It's important to remember that wellness doesn't have to be a solo journey. You are not alone. Sharing your struggles and strategies with peers, friends, or campus supports can help to normalize the ups and downs of health. Many students find strength in knowing others are moving through the same challenges. Consider joining clubs, the students' council, intramurals, getting involved in volunteer initiatives available on campus, or coming for workouts or Move Your Mood free programming at the Rec. All of which can help you meet people and make you feel less alone.
