Advanced Leadership Course Descriptions

Bronze Star: This course is perfect for those who have completed the swim patrol program or are looking to further their aquatic training. It is the pre-Bronze Medallion training standard and excellent preparation for success in Bronze Medallion.  In Bronze Star, participants develop problem-solving and decision-making skills as individuals and in partners.  They learn basic first aid, CPR and develop Water Smart confidence and the lifesaving skills needed to be their own personal lifeguard.

Bronze Medallion and Emergency First Aid teaches an understanding of the lifesaving principles embodied in the four components of water-rescue education - judgment, knowledge, skill and fitness.  Rescuers learn tows and carries, and defense methods and releases in preparation for challenging rescues of increased risk.  Lifesavers develop stroke efficiency and endurance in a 500 m timed swim. This course includes Emergency First Aid and CPR-B certification as well as AED training. Participants must be a minimum of 13 years of age OR have Bronze Star certification.

Bronze Cross and Standard First Aid is designed for lifesavers who want the challenge of more advanced training including an introduction to safe supervision in aquatic facilities. Bronze Cross is a prerequisite for all advanced training programs including National Lifeguard and Instructor certification. It includes a timed 600 m swim. This course also includes Standard First Aid with CPR-C and AED certification. Prerequisite is Bronze Medallion and Emergency First Aid with CPR B.

National Lifeguard Certification is the recognized standard for professional lifeguards in Canada. This course builds on the fundamental skills developed in Bronze Cross, focusing on advanced aquatic rescue, teamwork, leadership, and accident prevention in a supervised setting. Candidates develop critical decision-making and communication skills while managing simulated emergency situations in and around the water. The program includes fitness requirements such as a timed 400 m swim, object recovery, and victim management drills. Candidates will also learn how to manage emergencies involving spinal injuries, environmental hazards, and non-aquatic injuries. Prerequisites include Bronze Cross and Standard First Aid with CPR-C. Participants must be 15 years of age by the final day of the course.
